An Honest Look into FoxyCart’s Ecommerce Platform

Introducing FoxyCart
There are a million ecommerce platforms out there, each with different pros and cons, and different sweet spots as far as applications are concerned.
As we’ve talked about previously, and as you can see on our ecommerce platform comparison chart, there are three general categories of ecommerce platforms.
FoxyCart falls into the middle category.
It provides you the checkout, but you have to build the store.
That means there’s a bit more work compared to an out-of-the-box, turnkey ecommerce solution, but you also have more customization flexibility.
Ultimately, FoxyCart is more of a designer and developer platform than a DIY platform, especially if you have little or no experience in development.
Why We Like It
Because you have to build the store, you have the flexibility to customize the store’s functionality and design as much as you want.
At the same time, you don’t have to take on the risk and liability of processing credit cards. FoxyCart handles that stuff.
When you think about what’s happened with Home Depot, Target and other major brands that dealt with security breaches, and the complexity of IT security, that’s an extremely valuable component of FoxyCart.
With most platforms, you can customize the experience until you get to checkout. Because checkout needs to be secured, you usually can’t do much on the design side.
FoxyCart gives you a lot more design flexibility than other platforms in this particular category and allows you to customize the checkout in many ways to your needs.
The Verdict
If you’re a beginner and you’re looking for a turnkey solution, FoxyCart isn’t for you.
In fact, FoxyCart will try to pair you with a developer if you’re struggling to make it work, or they may suggest a different solution if you want something more turnkey.
That being said, we’re big fans of FoxyCart.
It’s built for designers and developers who want to customize the store, including checkout, without worrying about the headache of processing payments.
Bottom line, FoxyCart is a great, intermediate-level developer platform. For that, we give it two thumbs up.
